Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) RVSM was implemented to reduce the vertical separation above flight level (FL) 290 from 2000-ft minimum to 1000-ft minimum. It allows aircraft to safely fly more optimum profiles, gain fuel savings and increase airspace capacity.

Air-traffic control notifies operators of RVSM airspace by providing route planning information. Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) is defined as the reduction of vertical space between aircraft from 2,000 to 1,000 feet at flight levels from 29,000 feet up to 41,000 feet. RVSM was implemented as a means to increase airspace capacity and provide access to more fuel-efficient flight levels. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and its member states first mandated the implementation of RVSM in the North Atlantic in March 1997, with other regions around the world to Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) is defined as the reduction of vertical space between aircraft from 2,000 to 1,000 feet at flight levels from 29,000 feet up to 41,000 feet. Aircraft meeting the equipment requirements of Part 91, Appendix G, Section 9, which includes ADS-B OUT, may be operated under Part 91 by pilots with sufficient knowledge of RVSM requirements, without first obtaining an LOA from the FAA. The FAA removed a lot of the RVSM Maintenance Program requirements and have published Advisory Circular 91-85A to reflect these changes. On January 22, 2019, RVSM authorization was revised again for all Operators that have aircraft which are ADS-B out equipped and have published Advisory Circular 91-85B in regards to the new 14 CFR 91, Appendix G, Section 9. Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) is defined as the reduction of vertical space between aircraft from 2,000 to 1,000 feet at flight levels from 29,000 feet up to 41,000 feet. In particular it must be noted that if following a failure of an Air Data Computer (ADC), both the Captain’s and Co-pilot’s altimeter instruments are connected to a remaining single functional ADC, this arrangement does not meet the RVSM MASPS requirement for two independent primary altimetry systems. RVSM/International Operations Manuals. The RVSM approval process is very time consuming and confusing. What is Required to Meet RVSM Approval?

Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) Airspace. Within RVSM airspace, air traffic control (ATC) separates aircraft by a minimum of 1,000 feet vertically between FL 290 and FL 410 inclusive. Air-traffic control notifies operators of RVSM airspace by providing route planning information. Aircraft equipped with ADS-B Out avionics that meet altitude keeping requirements will no longer need to obtain reduced vertical separation minimum (RVSM) authorizations thanks to a new FAA rule. Maintenance requirements As for the inspection and maintenance requirements, if the aircraft was certified from the factory as an RVSM aircraft, all of the required equipment contained in this general RVSM requirements in terms of, inter alia, safety, required aircraft height-keeping performance, and operating aspects.
